The Miracle in the Shag Carpet

The Miracle in the Shag Carpet

Listen to this post

I will never forget the day I realized that the Creator of the universe cares just as much about a missing earring in a shag carpet as He does about the stars in the sky.

It all began with one of my favorite verses, Psalm 9:1: "I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wondrous works." When I think about the faithfulness of God, I often return to one particular "wondrous work" that happened right in my own bedroom closet. I had lost a favorite earring, and though it wasn't expensive, I loved it dearly. I spent hours on my hands and knees, crawling across the thick carpet and reaching under the dresser, searching every square inch. I couldn't find it anywhere.

Months went by. I eventually gave up and ordered a replacement pair, resigning myself to the fact that the original was gone forever. But one summer afternoon, I reached into the closet to grab a pair of flip-flops. I froze. There, hooked perfectly onto the toe strap of my shoe, was my earring.

I was so stunned I took a picture before I even touched it. As an inspirational composer, I am always looking for the rhythm of God’s grace, but this left me speechless. The opening on the earring was so small and the hook so delicate that I actually struggled to get it off the shoe with my own fingers. How did it find its way through that carpet and hook itself securely onto a shoe I hadn't worn in months?

This experience became a part of my Platforms of Praise. It was a visible reminder that nothing is lost to Him. If God can navigate a tiny piece of jewelry onto a specific spot on a shoe just to delight me, imagine what He can do with the bigger burdens of our hearts. These are the Steps To Joy we take when we realize we serve a God who is intimately involved in the details of our lives.

Reflection

Are you searching for something today? Whether it is a physical item, a sense of peace, or a solution to a problem, remember that God knows exactly where it is. He is faithful in the tiny details, and He simply wants us to give Him our hearts and trust His timing. He is so good, isn't He?
