I truly believe God moves the heavens to perform miracles in the middle of our grief, just to show us how much He cares about every detail of our lives.
When I think back on my years in Canada, one of the most tender moments centers around our beautiful dog, Shawnee. The day came when we knew we had to say goodbye to her, and the weight of that loss was incredibly heavy. Because it was too much for my family to face, I knew I had to be strong in the Lord for everyone else. I drove her to the vet by myself, heartbroken at the thought of leaving her in a cold office overnight to be put down at nine o’clock the next morning.
The following morning was a typical May day—bright, sunny, and warm. I was with the children at the school we had started, trying to stay composed as the clock ticked toward nine. But as the exact moment of Shawnee's passing approached, the atmosphere shifted. The sun vanished, the sky turned overcast, and out of nowhere, it began to snow.
In May in Canada, snow is not supposed to happen. Yet there they were—thick, white flakes falling from the sky like a blanket of peace. To me, snow has always represented purity and comfort. I looked at the children and told them, "God is honoring Shawnee’s life." As an inspirational composer, I have always looked for God's melody in the world, but this was a chorus only He could write.
We stood in that quiet, sacred moment, watching the snow fall in the middle of spring. Then, we did what we always do—we lifted our voices to the Lord. We turned our grief into Platforms of Praise, worshiping the God who sees every sparrow—and every dog—that falls. It was a beautiful reminder that even in our darkest Steps To Joy, He is faithful. He is a God we can trust, exalt, and worship without reserve, for He is present in every corner of our existence.
Reflections for the Heart
- What "small" grief are you carrying today that you think might be too insignificant for God?
- How has the Lord shown you His presence through nature or "miraculous" timing in the past?
- Take a moment to thank Him for being a God who is both the Creator of the heavens and the Comforter of your heart.
