No matter how dark the circumstances feel, God is faithful to honor the promises He whispered to us decades ago.
In 2011, I found myself in the middle of a terrifying medical crisis. What began as a routine B12 shot for anemia turned into a life-threatening infection. Despite my prayers and my attempts to treat it at home, the infection grew. I remember the urgency in the doctor’s voice when he drew a circle around the redness on my leg and told me, "If this exceeds this line, you have a life-threatening emergency. Don't wait."
Within twenty-four hours, that line was crossed. At the ER, the surgeon was blunt: without immediate surgery, I wouldn't survive. I tried to keep my spirits up with my usual sense of humor, joking with my son that we were checking into a spa, but the gravity of the situation was undeniable. The surgery was extensive, going eight inches deep into my leg—nearly to the bone.
During my recovery, a specialist came into my room and suddenly stopped, looking out toward the West Hills. "Oh look," she said, "there’s a rainbow!" Though it pained me to move, I sat up and searched the sky. As I looked out that hospital window, my mind raced back to 1979.
I was a "baby Christian" back then. After performing a musical I had written at a prison, I was driving through the mountains in a Volkswagen bug packed with thirteen teenagers. Suddenly, one of the kids pointed to the midnight sky. There, illuminated by a full moon, was a rare and beautiful "moonbow." When I later asked the Lord what that meant, He spoke a promise to my heart that I have never forgotten: "No matter how dark it gets, I will always be with you."
Seeing that rainbow from my hospital bed was a "God-wink" that bridged thirty-two years. As an inspirational composer, I have spent my life looking for God’s hand in the melody of life, and there He was, reminding me that He hadn't left my side. He moved me from a place of fear into Steps To Joy by proving His word is true.
Reflection
Is there a promise God made to you years ago that you’ve tucked away? When the "infections" of life seem to grow beyond the lines we’ve drawn, remember that His faithfulness does not have an expiration date. Look for your rainbow today; He is right there in the room with you.
